Our Mission
Kahn Media Law exists because we want each and every creative freelancer to understand the agreements they sign.
We believe that today’s digital economy is a machine fueled by the contributions of brave independent voices – the fact that creatives are pressured to sign one-sided contracts without having someone in their corner is a major problem facing our generation, and Kahn Media Law seeks to build a new type of law firm that gives every independent artist their own business & legal affairs department.
Negotiation is a routine part of any business relationship. Most people would agree that it’s reasonable to negotiate before signing a contract; in this freelance economy, however, the harsh reality is that most creative freelancers feel forced to sign contracts as-is, without any sort of legal review or negotiation. We believe this happens for two reasons: (1) she doesn’t have a lawyer, and doesn’t know where she’d find one who understands the unique pressures facing millennials in the creative industries, and (2) she can’t risk losing the deal (which the client says “needs to be signed right away”).
And of course, lawyers always complicate things and damage the relationship… right?
Not us.
We’ve been on both sides of these deals. We know what “work for hire” actually means, and we want to explain why it’s appropriate in some cases, but totally unfair in others.
Kahn Media Law is thankful to each and every one of our clients for inviting us to join their journey - and in doing so, helping us to achieve our mission of elevating and empowering creatives everywhere.
